As a permanent resident, you can live and work indefinitely in Australia. However your permanent resident visa allows you to leave and re-enter Australia multiple times during the initial 5 years from grant. If you wish to leave Australia after the initial 5 year period, you must have Resident Return Visa to enable you to return to Australia. RRV should be obtained before you depart from Australia and if you leave without RRV, you may not be allowed to return to Australia.
You should have spent two of the last five years in Australia to be granted the five year Resident Return Visa. If you have been absent from Australia you must show substantial cultural, business, employment or personal ties benefiting Australia and compelling reasons for your absence.
You could be granted three (3) months Resident Return Visa if you have been absent from Australia for more than three (3) months and show compelling and compassionate reasons for your departure.
