student

You can study English language courses (SC 570)  or in primary or secondary school (SC 571) or vocational (SC 572) or higher education (SC 573) or postgraduate research (SC 574) or non-award (SC 574). The assessment level for your course is determined by the passport you hold and the education sector of your main course. You can work 20 hours a week during course duration and unlimited hours during course breaks. You can bring your partner along and your partner can work 20 hours a week. If you are doing a postgraduate course, your partner can work unlimited hours.

tourist

Passport holders from selected countries or from European Union or other Euopean countries who want to visit Australia for tourism or business purpose for  short-term up to three (3) months may apply for the ETA (Visitor) Subclass 976 visa or an eVisitors Subclass 651 visa. To visit Australia for up to 12 months for holiday or recreation or to visit family and friends or to study short-term course of less than  three (3) months, you must apply for Tourist Subclass 676 visa either from outside or from within Australia. You cannot work on this visa but can extend the visa. If you wish to visit family for a holiday up to 12 months, you should be sponsored by your family member living in Australia and apply for Family Visitor Visa Subclass 679.

Working Holiday 

If you are from an eligible country, aged between 18 and 30 years and your primary aim is to holiday in Australia but want to supplement the cost of your holiday through short-term employment , you may be eligible for twelve (12) months Working Holiday Subclass 417 or 462 visa. You must be outside Australia at the time of application and also when the visa is granted. You can work upto six (6) months for a single employer.   

retirement

If you are aged 55 years or older, have no dependents, have assets valued at least AUD 750,000 and a minimum net annual income of AUD 65,000 (assets valued at AUD 500,000 & income AUD 50,000, if you intend to live in Regional Australia),  you may apply for Investor Retirement Subclass 405 Visa. This multiple entry visa is issued for 4 years and you could bring your partner along  and can work up to 20 hours a week.

medical treatment

if you have confirmed medical treatment, have sufficient funds for treatment and living expenses while in Australia, you could be granted a short-term three (3) months single entry or multiple entry Subclass 675 visa. You can study up to three (3) on this visa. If you intend to donate an organ or are planning long-term medical treatment or you are over 50 and have been refused permanent visa solely on health grounds or you are accompanying the person needeing treatment, you may be eligible for Long Stay Subclass 685 visa. You can stay between  three (3) and twelve (12) months and can study up to three (3) months.

transit

if you are a citizen of specified country and departing Australia within 8 hours of schedule time of arrival, hold confirmed onward booking and remain in transit lounge at the airport, you do not require Transit Visa. If you are transiting through Australia and do not qualify for transit without a visa or you are traveling to Australia to join a vessel as a crew, you need Transit Visa Subclass 771 even if you are flying out in the same aircraft from the same airport and stay in the transit lounge.  The transit visa is issued free of charge.
