As a permanent resident, you can live and work indefinately in Australia. However if you wish to leave Australia, you must have a Return Resident Visa to enable you to return to Australia. The RRV should be obtained before you depart from Australia.
five year resident Return visa
You should have spent two of the last five years in Australia to be granted the five year Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155). If you have been absent from Australia you must show substantial cultural, business, employment or personal ties benefitting Australia and compelling reasons for your absence.
Three month resident return visa
You could be granted three (3) month Return Resident Visa if you have been absent from Australia for more than three (3) months and show compelling and compassionate reasons for your departure.
